Page 7 08/30/12

Another page up as I work on the V/N over on Skyborn. I really probably should start drawing new pages before I catch up to my stock.

Transcript:
Mason: Or do you mean you haven't figured it out yet? Of course He's have to make one who's not able to get it.
The touch? The reaction?
Her Misery? Surely you've got the next step figured out by now. He could have told you...
I'm pretty sure that you know EXACTLY what to do next. Look at your wrist. Look at her suffering. It's time.

I love visual novels. I'm working on a system for them in GM8 for Skyborn. My mom recently called me to ask what they were, and the difference between them and, say, a graphic novel. I came up with this. Visual Novels include events in the text, but descriptions of static surroundings are left to the images. Graphic Novels depict actions visually as well. So you can much "easierly" remove the art from a VN than a GN. You'd have a really surreal-sounding work, I figure, with minimal scenery description to give you a fix on your surroundings, but it'd work. Try the same thing with a graphic novel. I dare you. You'd have the counterpart inverse of David Lynch's Eraserhead. But it'd be fun.

Now on to the comic. I ask those who might be offended at some lines in this page be not so, as it will become clear in time. Still, I ask for critique.

Transcript:
Mason: You know, it's a sick game He has you playing.
A touch being that horrifying, and you needing to calm her spirit.
Laus: My touch? That's what did it? And calm her... what?
Mason: Worse, if you weren't told. It's never helpful when you aren't told. He knows best, I suppose, but it honestly causes more problems than we need.
See her eye? It's a dead eye. Nothing for her anymore. Time to take her home, Freshman.

Transcript:
Mason: Well, enjoying this blue ball? Having a particularly good day on the job?
Laus: Job? What? Who? What's going on? She's... she's hurt... she needs help... can you...?
Mason: Yes, but not in the way you want me too. See, you have a job to do, Shinigami. What's your name? It'll be important later. But she's going absolutely nowhere without your help. I realize you're new, but still, you need to hurry.
Laus: Um... right? Do we carry he-
Mason: No, not unless you feel like it. You can do it fine right here. She won't really care anymore, clearly.
Laus: Right, I have to do it. He knows... what do I do?

You'll notice that I changed the fonts. This is because I had to format my hard drive, fortunately I had some means of backing the stuff up. And Skyborn will continue being developed. I'll be back on adding another post over there tomorrow. Finish a bit of stuff I left unfinished.

Fourth and last page of the ones previously uploaded. That leaves nine left in the chapter, for those curious, or confused by my horrible lack of clarity. Well, anyway, now comes the challenge of writing new dialogue for each successive page! WOO! The first chapter will give you a rough fix on what exactly is going on in this bizarre world. And why is Laus' touch so painful anyway? And why is... and what was...? And other questions you have, besides "Why does your art suck?" will be answered throughout the story. Or turned into even more outlandish questions.... such as "Is Rei, like, my mother?" Well, obviously not exactly. As much as she's been cloned, this is not a work in fact inspired in anyway by NGE, as I came up with the story well prior to watching it. Also. I'd hit copyright issues for sure. And rightfully so. In order to keep entertaining or torturing you with my art and writing, I'll avoid stealing characters.

Transcript:
Laus (Thought): What is this? Why did she do that? Why?
I was only trying to help! She didn't need to do that! Now she'll die! There's nothing I can do!
I can't believe that she did that! What can I do? Run?
If that is all? I have to! Don't stop! Run!
Mason: She's not going to just die, you know...
Laus: What?
Mason: She needs a bit more of your help than just a touch for that... a cut wrist? She'll survive it. For now...

It's moving faster in this one, the first Destruction, or Hakaikame is introduced.  He's not much of a thinker, you'll notice. Quick and to the point. Wait until he and Laus start talking, the contrast will be frightening. I intend to have a new post up on Skyborn yet tonight as well, incidentally, for those following that as well.

Transcript:
Mason Clasym (Thought): ... Another good job done. That meteor earlier. Did they send a new one?
... maybe I should go and say hello. Doesn't look like anyone else is around.
...
Hmm?
...
Maybe he's caught onto his job already.

Page two. For all who are actually checking up on this, I thank you. It's taking time and effort, especially with Skyborn in process simultaneously, but I hope to still be able to finish this. Maybe I'll shoot for ten chapters instead of nine, making 130 pages when the story is finished. Can't guarantee, though. We'll see how long the ending is when I get there. Here, I'll put a transcript up this time, and add it to my earlier post.

EDIT: Sorry about forgetting the page... that was utterly my bad. Good thing I checked it before I went to bed, now you get to criticize my artwork too.

Transcript:
Laus (Thought): Why? Why do they suffer this way?
So much pain and suffering in this world. People who abuse others for profit and pleasure...
can no one see the tears that woman cries?
They least they could do is lend an arm to one another. Why not this? Maybe that's my reason.
She still doesn't look at me.
Perhaps I should address her, find the root of the grief... give her someone to lean on...
Laus: Miss? Do you need help?
Laus (Thought): She still gives no indication of noticing me. Perhaps the shock is too great. Perhaps I don't
wish to know why? But no matter. Once help has been offered, one can not renege. I should
help the poor girl to her feet.
Girl (screaming): NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
Laus (Thought):  What's this? My touch? A wail of pain... was she injured? No... that wasn't the pain in that
scream... that was the pain of despair.

I've wanted for awhile to start a weekly webcomic, and after having a story arc in my head for about 8 months, I finally got around to drawing and scanning the pages. So, incidentally, the first four pages will be put up over the next seven days, and from there I will go to a weekly schedule until I finish the story arc.
Its a attempt at a philosophical surrealist story, and experimenting with the tropes that make up the work. In this case, the Chekov's Gun trope, as tvtropes.org calls it, will be the main focus of the nine chapters of this webcomic. I hope you enjoy it, and grant me criticism, pun not intended, on my skill or use. Also tell me if I need to experiment with the format.

And without further ado, I hand you to the adventure of Laus Chriticize, a man who doesn't know who or what he is.

Transcript:
Laus (Thought): I don't know how long I fell, or from where, but I definitely came from somewhere, I think. But waking up, especially when it seemed like the first time, was a terrifying experience.
And I fell into this strange new world with no sense of purpose.
Maybe I was a fluke? Did I belong here? What is this world of artificial structures towering over the lands? And all the souls wandering all over it? What purpose does it serve?
And such a filthy world. Does it really matter? Do I? Does anything?
And what are these on my arms? Blades? And what does "Shinigami" mean? How could I even know it says "Shinigami"? What is my purpose?
I might as well try to find out. That is purpose enough for me, I suppose.
